Overcoming Imposter Syndrome as a New Birth Worker

Have you ever felt like you don’t belong or that you’re a fraud, just waiting for everyone to find out? That’s imposter syndrome talking. It’s a common experience among new birth workers, and it can be challenging to navigate the early stages of a new career when feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy arise.
Imposter syndrome is when people doubt their abilities and feel like they don't deserve their success. They worry about being seen as a fraud, even if there is evidence that they are doing well. This can hold them back from reaching their full potential.
But there is hope! There are practical steps you can take to overcome imposter syndrome as a birth worker. One tip is to seek support from mentors and colleagues. Surrounding yourself with supportive people who believe in you can help boost your confidence and remind you of your strengths and accomplishments.
Another tip is to focus on your personal strengths and celebrate small successes. It’s easy to get caught up in what we perceive as our shortcomings, but it’s important to remember the things we do well and the progress we’ve made.
Investing in your education can also help build confidence. Learning new skills and expanding your knowledge can help you feel more capable and competent in your role as a birth worker. It can also provide you with new tools and techniques to better serve your clients.
Self-care and stress management are also important in overcoming imposter syndrome. Taking care of yourself, both physically and mentally, can help reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.
I know what it’s like to feel like an imposter. At the beginning of my career, I experienced those same feelings of self-doubt and fear. Although I lacked the confidence I needed, I slowly gained it by thinking about all the people who would go without if I didn’t add my talent, personality, uniqueness, and most importantly my story. I knew that even my struggles would allow me to connect with people who I wouldn’t be able to without. My story would give me the ability to relate to others in a way that could be life-changing. This, along with encouragement from my close circle of loved ones, pushed me beyond feeling like an imposter.
Imagine your life free from this imposter feeling! You will feel more confident and capable in your role as a birth worker. You will be able to make a positive impact on your community, providing support and care to those who need it most. As a lactation consultant, you could provide expert advice and support to new mothers who are struggling with breastfeeding, helping them overcome challenges and build confidence in their ability to nourish their babies. As a doula, you could provide personalized care during pregnancy, labor, and delivery, helping expectant parents feel supported and empowered throughout their journey.
So believe in yourself and your abilities. Take steps towards overcoming your imposter syndrome and becoming more confident in your role as a birth worker. Use that inspiration to drive you in the right direction. You can make a difference!
